A Delirium Tremens in Alcoholism

Abstract
This study was aimed to reveal important differences between delirium group and non-delirium group after withdrawal of alcohol. Subjects were composed of 151 men inpatients who had been diagnosed as a alcohol dependence ad alcohol abuse by
DSM-III-R at
department of neuropsychiatry, Chung Ang University, Young-San and Phil-Dong Hospital from January in 1989 to June in 1992. Results were summarized as follows:
1) Delirium tremens group occured in 31.1% of all cases and non-delirium group in 68.9%.
2) delirium manifested during 2 to 3 days after cessation of drinking in 44.7% of delirium tremens group and the duration of delirium was 4~10 days in 53.2%.
3) Considering sociocultural factors, delirium group was likely to have lower education level, to liver at small city and town, to be at old age(>50 years old) than non-delirium group, and had more problem about economy and occupation rather
than
marital problem or intrafamilial conflict. But there were no statistical significance.
4) In about 78.7% of delirium group exhibited the daily drinking patterns. Comparded with non-delirium group, delirium group had drunk over 2 to 3 bottles in Korean hard liquor(So-Joo) and had lasted sustained-pattern drinking over 5 years.
5) Computerized tomography(CT) scans showed more frequently pathological findings, mainly cerebral atropy, in delirium group. the delirium group was frequently associated with liver diseases, neuromuscular diseases, convulsive disorders,
cardiovascular
diseases than non-delirium group.
